Posted October 5th, 2012

With October now recognised as the official start to the local cruise season, next weekend marks the start of our six month "wave season". The 2012-13 cruise season is set to have a record number of passengers, ships and ports of call, to make it the most exciting one yet!

Carnival Australia (encompassing P&O Australia and International, Princess Cruises, Carnival Spirit, Cunard and Seabourn) will have 19 ships in our waters, carry 325,000 passengers and make 310 calls to Australian ports, while Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd will host more than 200,000 passengers on 4 ships.

A record 14 Carnival Australia ships will be based in Australia for the 2012-13 season, and another 5 ships will be visiting as part of their world cruising itineraries. These include the Australian debut of Carnival Spirit; maiden visits from Seabourn Quest and Holland America's Oosterdam; and the return of Queen Mary II, undertaking her inaugural circumnavigation of New Zealand. All of these add to up to more ships cruising down under for longer!

Carnival CEO, Ann Sherry has said, "In all, this cruise season we'll carry more than triple the number of passengers who cruised with use 8 years ago when Carnival Australia was first formed. We'll be visiting more Australian ports than ever before, with 27 different towns and cities set to welcome our ships over the coming months."

RCCL's two newcomers - Voyager of the Seas and Celebrity Solstice - will become the 2 largest and most modern cruise ships ever based in Australia. Adam Armstrong, the Australia and New Zealand Commercial Director of RCCL, said that Voyager and Solstice will "revolutionise the cruising landscape as we introduce a size and calibre of superliners previously only experienced overseas."

The season will officially kick off with the arrival of Radiance of the Seas on Friday, 12 October, as it is the first international cruise ship to arrive in Australia. Rhapsody of the Seas will follow shortly, arriving on 14 October, and Celebrity Millennium will arrive in November.

Carnival Spirit, Oosterdam, Voyager of the Seas and Celebrity Solstice are also all arriving before Christmas, and in the New Year, we will see maiden voyages in Australia from Seabourn Quest and Oceania's Marina.
