24 Hours On Ovation Of The Seas

Posted March 20th, 2016

From fascinating ports to new and exciting onboard innovations, cruising means more than simply unpacking once. Cruise ships are only getting bigger, better and more jam-packed with extras; a fact that couldn't be truer with Royal Caribbean International. Whether you're a discerning diner, a luxe lover or a pleasure seeker, each one of their massive ships offer adventure and delight. Here's what a day might look like on the new Ovation of the Seas.

Carnival Magic

07:00 Rise and shine

If you're in a balcony stateroom, arise and step out onto your private veranda and enjoy the views of the ocean idling by. Those staying in an inside stateroom need only flick on the floor-to-ceiling high-definition digital screen for a real-time outdoor view from the virtual 'balcony'.

08:00 Fuel up

Armed with the daily activity schedule, fuel up with an array of a la carte options or made-to-order buffet specialities to ensure you're well nourished for the next few hours. Breakfast is the best time to plot out a rough plan of your day.

09:00 Determine the lay of the land

If it's your first day onboard, take the time to understand the lay of the land (so to speak). Ovation of the Seas is the largest ship to ever be based in Australia, and at 348 metres long by 50 metres high, the mammoth liner covers 18 decks across the length of three footballs fields. Needless to say, it's not hard to get lost. But, if you take the time to orient yourself, you can cut down on walking time to and from your stateroom, and even find some hidden nooks and crannies to enjoy some down time.

Carnival Magic

10:30 Get sky-high

Ovation of the Seas is innovative, to say the least. Activities are no longer dominated by shuffleboard courts and bingo games. This ship truly elevates leisure experiences and North Star offers the best view. A jewel-shaped capsule on a robotic arm extends and gently rotates 300-feet above sea level for unbeatable 360-degree views. If you want something a little more adventurous, feel the thrill of skydiving at RipCord by iFLY.

12:00 Savour a leisurely lunch

24 hours in a day; 18 venues on board. Foodies will need to do some serious planning if they want to sample every onboard restaurant during the course of their cruise. For lunch, at no extra cost, linger over fresh, modern fare at Chic; explore eclectic Asian flavours at Silk; salivate over rustic steaks at American Icon Grill; or take a nod to a bygone era at the sophisticated The Grande Restaurant. If you're saving the main meal for the evening, enjoy a casual lunch at Windjammer Marketplace or Sorrentos.

13:30 Rest, relax and recharge

Ease into the afternoon at the Vitality Spa & Fitness Centre. A spot of Pilates or yoga will refresh your mind, body and soul, or you could slip away into languid bliss with a spa or beauty treatment. If you want to work off lunch, you'll find workout programs to join, as well as state-of-the-art gym equipment available for use.

Carnival Magic

14:30 Amusement time

Another one of the ship's highly anticipated features is SeaPlex, the largest indoor active space at sea. Think amusements such as 30 bumper cars, roller rink and even a food truck. If you're travelling with the extended family, this is the perfect place to spend time together. But if you'd rather bypass this area, take a seat next to the expansive windows of Two70 and laze away the afternoon with a good book.

17:00 Aperitif hour with a difference

After a busy day onboard, head back to your cabin and freshen up for some pre-dinner drinks. But we're not talking the usual aperitif hour. The Bionic Bar is where technology meets mixology; robotic barmen can mix two cocktails a minute!

Carnival Magic

18:30 A decadent dinner

Ovation of the Seas' dining horizon is star-studded. Top chef Jamie Oliver is bringing his famed Jamie's Italian restaurant onboard to join a line-up of premium restaurants. From hearty Italian classics to the refined, subtle flavours of Izumi Japanese Cuisine, expect world-class fare prepared with finesse and flair for only a small surcharge.

20:30 Enjoy an entertainment extravaganza

Cap off your evening at Two70. But, you won't find the same tranquil space as earlier in the day. By night, Vistarama takes over and floor-to-ceiling views are replaced with vivid, fantastical scenes as part of the entertainment line-up. Be wowed by an aerial show and stage performance like no other.

Give me street food over Michelin stars, cellar doors over wine bars and small towns and wide open spaces over big cities any day. Travel for me means ticking off the 'to eat and drink' list one regional flavour and wine bottle at a time.
